Anybody have resources for creating rubrics to help readers? Should I have teachers create their own rubrics?

One of the things our SJUSD cohort did this week was to collaborate on creating personal timelines, so that our timelines had a measure of articulation and therefore accountability.  We all agreed on our drop dead dates, the payment schedule, the calling for assessment center, etc. Then we tracked by month the entries, and then we broke down how many hours per month the group was willing to put in to their entries.  Finally, we made specific agreements for the next meeting.  Does that help?

We would like to keep an agenda going for our support group. Comments? Seems entry 4 keeps us consumed with each other...where do we move on from here. We started video taping..perhaps our entries?

Ok Stacy! Help me out here!  My union has agreed to help me hold an informational forum for teachers interested in National Boards  in May. Yay!  I have invited two possible support systems and also our district's NBCT's to come and speak, so potential candidates have places and faces to connect with.  I am crafting the agenda to talk about Take One and National Boards.  Can you think of anything I should plan for? At the CTA forum, there was a list of 5 NB cohorts and supports for the state. Can yo u share that list with me again?

I was there with Cate (and Sarah) at Stanford yesterday, and though the crowd was a bit smaller than I'd hoped for, I'd agree that it was an inspiring evening.  Let's stop and think about it for a moment... what do you suppose would be the reaction if I told a school board or union president or principal that I had a research-backed professional development strategy that would

  • raise the standards for excellent teaching
  • inspire teachers to take on extra, challenging work
  • help teachers work more collaboratively
  • produce meaningful results in schools (and no, I don't mean raising test scores, though that might happen too)

Who wouldn't sign on for that idea?  Everything else can be worked out, but we MUST work to build a consensus around this approach.  Not that everyone must do this as a mandated approach, but that National Board should be THE standard when we talk about quality teaching.  

I think partnerships are key.  Organizational collaboration can be a win-win situation for districts, local and state unions, teachers, universities, and the National Board.

Three NBCT's who went to the CTA forum in February also attended the screening of "The Mitchell 20" at Stanford today! we walked away inspired!

We just put an NBCT question in on our negotiation's survey to increase awareness that it even exists. The question was, if a stipend was offered for completion of the NBCT would you consider doing it?.. Some people said "absolutely" and some said "somewhat likely". Middle of the road said, "No way".

Last year when I approached my superintendent about offering some sort of incentive for NBCT certification he said, "Well what if everyone decides to do it?" He was afraid NBCTs would bankrupt our district.. it would be really nice if we at least included them in tiebreaker criteria for layoffs.. right now, in our contract, we pay for two people a year to get their NBCT certification ($2500 dollars each), but after that, they are on their own, no extra anything for having completed the certification. We have so much going on right now in our chapter, but.. I think teachers and administrators need to be better educated about what it entails and what teachers are better able to do at the end of the process.. worrying that you'll have to pay someone an extra 500 dollars a year is really insane given the potential benefit to students being taught by an NBCT. But, it's just the current leader, he won't be here forever.. so we'll keep chipping away, like we do with everything else..

By the way, pre NBCT conference at Good Teaching South was great last year, panel was super- would recommend people go and check it out.

And.. I have a cool image to share if I can figure out how to transfer it from my phone- good incentive for people to get their certification. Stay tuned..

  • Go do it!

  • Correcting the wrong message, NB process helped to become a better teacher. Raise the profession
  • Ways CTA could assist with awareness
  • Teacher to Teacher conversations about NB (after BTSA)
  • CTA advocate for financial incentives at local and state level
  • Clear connection with public about NB in the teacher evaluation agenda
  • How we can get together and network at this group
